TX Adopts 2018 IECC

Welcome to TX Energy Code

The 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) is the official energy code for Texas, regulating residential and commercial energy efficiency standards.

Texas Energy Code Overview

On September 3, 2019, Texas adopted the 2018 IECC, replacing the 2015 IECC as the minimum statewide energy standard.

✅ Key Energy Code Requirements:

Blower Door Testing – Mandatory for all new homes (≤5 ACH50 in Zones 2 & 3, ≤3 ACH50 in Zone 4).

Duct Leakage Testing – Required if ducts are located outside conditioned space

Mechanical Ventilation – Must comply with ASHRAE 62.2.

High-Efficiency Lighting – At least 90% of permanently installed fixtures must be LED, CFL, or fluorescent

Window & Insulation Upgrades – Homes must meet Texas-specific U-factor and SHGC limits.

Texas Energy Code Compliance Pathways

Builders in Texas can comply with the 2018 IECC through the following methods:

Prescriptive Path – Follow standard insulation, window, and system efficiency tables.
Performance Path – Use energy modeling to demonstrate compliance.
HERS Index (ERI Path) – Homes must meet a maximum ERI score based on Texas climate zones.
