Lighting Requirements for Texas Energy Code Compliance

Energy-Efficient Lighting is Required in Texas

Under the 2018 IECC, Texas mandates that at least 90% of permanently installed lighting fixtures must use high-efficacy lamps.

This is an increase from the 75% requirement in the 2015 IECC.

High-Efficacy Lighting Options:

LED bulbs (Light-Emitting Diodes)

– Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)

– T8 or smaller linear fluorescent lamps

– Other lamps meeting minimum efficiency standards

Minimum Efficacy Requirements for Lighting in Texas
Lamp Wattage Minimum Lumens per Watt (lm/W)
>40W ≥60 lm/W
15-40W ≥50 lm/W
<15W ≥40 lm/W
All installed lighting must meet or exceed these efficiency levels

Additional Texas Lighting Requirements

🔹 Manual Controls:
– All lighting systems must have manual or automatic controls to prevent unnecessary energy use.

🔹 Dimming & Occupancy Sensors:
– Required in certain spaces, such as garages and multi-room buildings, to improve efficiency.

🔹 Exterior Lighting Compliance:
Outdoor fixtures must be high-efficacy OR controlled by motion sensors or automatic timers.
