Texas Energy Code Adoption Timeline

The 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) is the statewide energy code for Texas, replacing the 2015 IECC. Below is the timeline for its adoption and enforcement.

Key Dates for Texas Energy Code Implementation

September 1, 2016
✔ Texas adopted the 2015 IECC statewide as the minimum energy code for all residential and commercial buildings.

September 3, 2019
✔ Texas officially adopted the 2018 IECC as the statewide standard.
✔ Local jurisdictions were allowed to amend the code to be stricter, but not weaker.

March 1, 2020
✔ The grace period for using the 2015 IECC ended.
✔ All new construction permit applications had to comply with the 2018 IECC.

Future Energy Code Updates for Texas

🚀 2021 IECC Review (Pending Adoption)
– The Texas Energy Systems Laboratory (TESL) is currently evaluating the 2021 IECC for potential statewide adoption.

– Some cities, including Austin, Dallas, and Houston, have already implemented stricter versions of the 2021 IECC.

– Statewide adoption is still under review and not yet mandated.
